A guide for young people aged 13–25. Stay calm, know your rights, and understand what police can and cannot do.
Stay Calm
If a police officer stops you:
- Stay calm and be patient
- Treat the interaction like a conversation
- Avoid aggressive language or behaviour
- Police officers may record interactions using body cameras
Why Police Might Stop You
Illegal Drugs
If they suspect you are carrying drugs.
Weapons
If they believe you may have a weapon.
Stolen Property
If they suspect items have been stolen.
Crime Tools
Objects that could be used to commit a crime.
Fireworks
Illegal fireworks or dangerous items.
Firearms
If they suspect firearms or similar weapons.
Police Cannot Stop You Just Because Of
- Your race
- Your age
- Your nationality
- Your religion
- Your appearance
- Your clothing
- Your criminal history
What Police Must Tell You
Before searching you they should explain:
G.O.W.I.S.E.L.Y
- G – Grounds for the search
- O – Object of the search
- W – Warrant card (if not in uniform)
- I – Identity of the officer
- S – Station they are attached to
- E – Entitlement to a search record
- L – Legal power used
- Y – You are being detained for a search
What Police Can Search
- Bags
- Pockets
- Jackets
- Hats
- Gloves
- Socks
In public you should not normally be asked to remove clothing except coats, jackets or gloves.
Can You Film Police?
Yes. You can film police in public places.
- Keep a reasonable distance
- Do not obstruct the officer
- Ask permission if filming someone being searched
If You Feel Treated Unfairly
You can make a complaint by:
- Calling 101
- Using the police website
- Visiting a police station
- Contacting Citizens Advice
- Contacting the Independent Office for Police Conduct
